In Indonesia, the coconut tree is called pokok seribu guna (“the tree of a thousand uses”)because virtually every part of the tree can be used. Coconut sugar is a natural sweetener produced from the sap of coconut flowers. Farmers use traditional methods to tap the sap of the flowers, which is the only ingredient in our sugar! The taste is similar to brown sugar but with a richer flavour and a tinge of caramel. That rich caramel flavour is used to enhance the flavours in anything you use it with. Our sugar does not contain cane sugar and
no additives.
In South East Asia, coconut sugar is a traditional sweetener that has been used for thousands of years. The methods for harvesting it has never been changed even up till today.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the World Bank reports that coconut sugar is the most sustainable sweetener in the world. Coconut trees produce more sugar per acre than cane sugar while using less soil nutrients and water. It is also possible to produce both coconut sugar as well as coconuts from the same tree. The farmer just needs to leave the flowers to matureand blossom.
We proudly produce our coconut sugar from Central Java in Indonesia. Farmed and owned by villagers. |
